A painting by the American painter Frank Duveneck.
Frank Duveneck, Portrait of a man.

Been twice at the Frans Hals this year already. Those Americans intrigue me: Ferdinand Roybet, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri… And also Frank Duveneck. Duveneck painted a head by first applying several different colors upon the canvas, than mixing these untill he had the required tints, and subsequently painting a fascinating head with character and a glimpse of a soul from that. Beautiful. His Portrait of a man! – Two train tickets Nijmegen-Haarlem in one month is admittedly expensive, but one does get back something very good.
